Det er muligens misvisende å kalle Enslaved for en institusjon innen norsk metal, all den tid begrepet i kulturell sammenheng bærer med seg en forestilling om at noe er satt og gjerne har sine mest kreative år bak seg. Enslaved har aldri hvilt på en vinnerformel og har alltid hatt det som forsett å utfordre både seg selv og lytteren når de har skrevet ny musikk. Men om man skal oppsummere norsk metal-historie og dens internasjonale appell, er det ingen tvil om at Enslaved spiller en avgjørende rolle både som sjangerspydspiss og brobygger de siste 20 årene.
