DEUS MORTEM – Real Hell

Eternal Terrors Karina Cifuentes visited the Under the Black Sun Festival outside Berlin earlier this summer and there she met Necrosodom (N) from the Polish black metal horde DEUS MORTEM.

How did the idea of creating Deus Mortem come to life?

Deus Mortem was founded in 2008 and the idea behind it was that I was previously playing in bands which style was similar to what we musicaly represent and I wanted to continue this way and that’s it, that was the main impulse.

This year’s Under the Black Sun Festival, even though it takes place in Germany it’s pretty polish oriented and I see the polish Black Metal scene rising, refining itself and becoming a force to be reckoned with so give us your own opinion and insights on the polish Black Metal scene.

On polish BM scene I see many bands focusing on looking for their own ideas how to create art and I think this is the main factor deciding of their unique character. Polish artists which I respect prefer quality of their creation instead of being popular, so this is why it’s far from mainstream crap. Bands invited to join UTBS are only a small part of polish underground. We have real hell of great bands.

Are there any other polish underground bands, not playing at UTBS, that we should pay more attention to?

Check out bands like Szron, Throneum, Stillborn, Kriegsmaschine, Cultes des Ghoules, Doombringer, Non Opus Dei, Arkona, Diabolicon, Freezeing Blood, Bestial Raids, Temple Desecration or Leichengott, just to name a few.

What kind of influences Deus Mortem has?

Our music is mainly rooted in old school black, death and thrash metal bands from the late 80’s and 90’s and if I had to mention the bands which were influential bands to DM style it would be Bathory, Burzum, Kat, Beherit, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Master’s Hammer, Marduk, Abruptum, Absu, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Funeral Winds, Slayer, old Samael. I am also inspired by greek BM scene with acts like Necromantia, Zemial, Rotting Christ, Varathron. Also Nifelheim, Tormentor, Funeral Mist, Triumphator, Profanatica, Incantation, early Deicide, Destroyer 666, Bestial Warlust, old Morbid Angel, Katharsis and Deathspell Omega are important part of my inspirations. I treat all those bands as a foundation on which we build our unique style and spirit.

Can you give us an update on Azarath?

We are going to play at Gothoom Festival on the 15th August in Slovakia. The recordings of another full-length album is planned on 2015. Everything depends on Inferno’s ability to join the forces with the rest of the band to start working on it.

How about Inferno, is he playing guitars in DM still?

He would play often but he has a lot of obligations with Behemoth, so he is not the guitarist now. He may always join the band if he is able to do it, but we needed to find replacement in person of Sinister F.D.S. from polish Beliar and I think it was good choice.
