MEER – Playing House

The musically daring and innovative Norwegian outfit named MEER will soon release this sophomore effort of theirs, and there is a lot to look forward to if you fancy immersing yourself in an original and eclectic mixture of prog rock, (symphonic) pop, and (experimental) rock music.
There is a surreal and dreamlike quality to this record’s eleven compositions and plenty of strong melodies and marvelous vocal hooks to wrap one’s head around. Apart from the warm and vibrant sound as well as the stellar musicianship, the album manages to weave huge-sounding parts and introspective passages together in a manner most seamless and "Playing House" is overflowing with emotional weight and depth. The vocals occasionally miss the mark a little, but that hardly matters as I am blown away by how creative this beautiful thing is in the overall perspective.
"Playing House" is a refreshing and musically adventurous output with a solid dose of spirit to it, and to these ears it sounds as if MEER are carving out a musical niche of their own while exuding confidence and determination. There is also something strangely charming and almost peculiar about the way in which its Syd Barrett-like melancholy and perfectly intriguing soundscapes suck you in and refuse to let go. In short, this is clever but catchy stuff that the openminded listeners out there ought to invest their time and hard-earned money in it as soon as it hits the street in January 2021.
