BLACK BOOK LODGE – Entering Another Measure

The second studio album from Danish stoner progressive metal act Black Book Lodge "Entering Another Measure" appears swiftly after last year’s "Tûndra" debut. A power trio lineup allows the focus to be primal, honing in on specific moods or feels and expanding upon hooks and riffs like a fully forming tree. Sometimes adding in a down-tuned southern groove keeps a relatively shorter track like 5:18 "Ad Interim" swinging, the clean, post-rock guitar parts complimenting the soothing, atmospheric/ alternative rock vocals from Ronny Jønsson.
Soundgarden would be proud of their influence on the swanky "27 Years", picking evil bass and dark chord combinations that shake the foundations while culminating in this distortion-oriented volcanic conclusion. At 6 songs and 41 minutes, there’s enough to absorb without feeling that exhaustion factor- especially when taking in the more psychedelic-oriented number "New Provenance" to dynamically contrast the heavier, more distortion oriented arrangements.
The horizon shapes up just fine for Black Book Lodge – crossing genres smoothly and keeping stoner progressive metal entertaining.
