GALAR – De Gjenlevende

"De Gjenlevende" is the third full length release from Bergen trio Galar. This is melodic black metal with a strong edge of folk and I like the way the two genres are blended here; the folk is convincing and the BM part is fast and brutal. Of course it is all in Norwegian so they could be singing about salted cod and chasing trolls up a fjord in their leather underpants for all I know.
The first thing that strikes the listener is the musical ability of all concerned. The clean vocals are stunning, the folk instruments are spot on and the guitar and rhythm section are faultless. If Windir, Winterfylleth or Borknagar float your longship, then you will welcome Galar with a glad heart and open arms. They perfectly capture that epic medieval feel of adventurers yearning for a better world. Best of all though is the ease with which they marry top-notch melodic song-writing with powerful BM aesthetics.
If this genre is your thing, then Galar are a band you should not miss out on.
