MY SILENT WAKE – Eye of the Needle

"Eye of the Needle" by the morose UK outfit named My Silent Wake (that band name truly says it all!) is, strictly speaking, not a metal album as such, but it is way darker and more melancholic than countless so-called black metal records out there today. Trust me on that.
In a way, there are slight hints and traces of death and (funeral) doom metal scattered throughout this album, but that is mostly to do with the atmophere and mood of some of the songs and passages as opposed to the actual music itself. Layers of sound, repetitive and forlorn melodies, whispers and spoken words, ghostly bass-lines, and eerie lyrics are all present on "Eye of the Needle", but there is a glimmer of hope amid the nightmarish waves of darkness that wash over one. This album is be to listened to when alone and preferably in one sitting as it works best as one long orchestrated piece of depair.
I strongly encourage the open-minded listeners out there to immerse themselves in "Eye of the Needle". It is a testament to the fact that haunting, introspective, and soul-crushing music does not necessarily consist of power chords and distortion. Lovers of experimental and hypnotic ambient/funeral doom/drone ought to appreciate this one.
