CAGE OF CREATION – III

The experimental black metal horde known as Cage of Creation is one of the more obscure yet intriguing bands to hail from the Russian extreme metal underground. The band’s take on black metal is interesting in that it takes a lot of traits and elements from what one may associate with more traditional and icy tremolo-picked black metal and then blends those with lots of twisted melodies and sinister riffs, inhuman and morbid vocals, morose chants, carnivalesque and absurd segments, and hypnotic passages of a rather melancholic nature. This cassette/digital release simply entitled "III" is the last chapter in the tape EP trilogy and comprises four rather long compositions that constantly grow on me the more I listen to them. There is a lot of interesting and haunting stuff going on in the music, but at the same time it can be somewhat demanding in places and require a lot of attention on the part of the listener. The guitar work is brilliant in places and the vocals are so over-the-top from time to time that "III" attains an almost otherworldly atmosphere. If strange and compelling black metal is your thing then check this EP out on Bandcamp or invest in the tape release – just give it a bit of time and allow it to grow on you. "III" is pitch black stuff that will flush your day right down the toilet!
