NECROMANTIC WORSHIP – The Calling (Tape)

Up next is a release of the 2016 demo from Holland’s Necromantic Worship. This really has the feel of the early Greek black/death metal scene. This is dark, heavy and kvlt, with a strong emphasis on setting a seamless tone. As you might expect, Necromantic Worship are adept at setting up a rhythmic vibe and sticking with it. The guitars chug and howl, overlaid by strands of ethereal keyboards that add a mystical, occult feel.
Some of the songs here really take off at times, with some extremely accomplished and melodic guitar work contrasting nicely with the doomy death below. Overall though, there are a few intros and flabby parts that damage the overall impression. This is only a 20 minute release, so in my book 3 or 4 minutes lost to intros and fillers isn’t that welcome. Also Faceless Gods (a Necromantia cover) is nothing special at all.
Ultimately then, NW are a band with tons of potential, plenty of talent and a cool sound. All they need to do is get focussed and keep an eye on the quality with a view to putting out the killer full-length debut they are capable of. I’ll wait… but I probably won’t be listening to this while I do…
