THE CITIZEN – Curtain Call

An interesting, infectious cocktail prepared from the Italian melodic rockers The Citizen on this full-length album "Curtain Call". The quartet possess this guitar-oriented vibe that can be slightly pop/punkish at times, and then go into something more American related like R.E.M. the next song – opening themselves up to a wide fan base. Check out the title cut for more of the latter aspect, the breathy melodies from guitarist/keyboardist Ace reminiscent of Michael Stipe, the ringing out of the notes a la The Police, U2, or even Coldplay.
The sparseness in terms of tasteful licks and hooks makes "You and I" another favorite, a song that could be as easily acceptable in the late 80’s as it is today. The mood can be uplifting one moment, reflective and morose the next – as the piano led "Something Left" takes a spirited upturn during the second half thanks to the high end guitar work and heavier, psychedelic groove. The Citizen is not a band that normally would be a main feature on My Kingdom Music’s eclectic roster – but the talent supersedes the necessarily lack of atmosphere or heaviness, and we have to remember that this is melodic, alternative rock.
The Citizen will be a band to be on the lookout for – "Curtain Call" contains 36 minutes of breezy melodic rock that should gain a wide swath of followers from the alternative and conventional rock segments.
