"Antichristus Ex Utero" is the fifth full-length outing for Polish black thrashers Witchmaster. Notably, it sees the return of Behemoth legend Inferno after an absence of 10 years. Overall, this is a decent effort. The production is clean and modern – it allows the listener to hear everything that is going on without too much emphasis on heaviness or atmosphere. Would I know that Inferno was behind the kit if I hadn’t been told? Probably not. He does a great job of course, but doesn’t seem to playing at the same level as when he is with Behemoth. There are some good riffs going on and some effective grooves when things slow down, but a couple of problems endure. The first is said slowing down… much as Behemoth do these days, Witchmaster have quite a few passages that reduce tempo for build-up or effect. And much the same as contemporary Behemoth, I think they’ve overdone it. Too many of these sections, linked with the second problem, lack of consistency, means that as the album wears on, the listener’s enthusiasm drops somewhat. It loses immediacy and the few weaker passages break the spell. Which is a pity, as the stronger sections of this record really make me want to like it more than I actually do…
