"I’ve got my special save-the-world boots on", Devin claims in "The Mighty Masturbator" from the new album "Deconstruction". If he saves the world with this album is rather uncertain, but rest assured that this wild trip inside the mind of Devin Towsend is one helluva ride. You really have no idea what to expect, and when you’ve heard the album some 4-5 times, you’re probably not sure what you actually got.
A mishmash of insane lyrics, where the highlight comes when he’s offered food that doesn’t apply to him due to his lack of eating what’s offered. After all, he’s not into meat…
An insanity of musical ingredients, where you get power chords one minute, opera another, techno a third and blast beats as well. Devin is not close minded, to say the least…
A number of guests, who probably raise an already great album even more. Michael Åkerfeldt, Ihsahn, Floor Jansen and more…
An album like "Deconstruction" cannot leave the listener shun of any feeling. You may hate it, but you cannot be indifferent. I, for one, love albums where things just happen. There’s perhaps a thin red line somewhere, but musically speaking you may like one song, but the next one is rather alien to you. I mean, metal, then techno, then… Yeah, you know the drill. I have listened to this album probably 20 times now, and it still surprises me. There’s just so goddamn much going on, even at the same time…
Last night I woke up and remember I had songs from the album in mind, simply because I dreamt about the music therein. It’s true. And this tells me that the album is one of those haunting ones that infects you in strange ways. Yes, it moves in mysterious ways, so to speak.
The sound, the vocal work… "Deconstruction" is an album that holds more than you probably can digest. But if you’re in for it, enjoy the joyride through… …space and beyond. This is still not the perfect album. After all, the closing of "Pandemic" is simply too far out, too chaotic and doesn’t harmonize with the rest of the album. It’s like it should fit, but it doesn’t. To me it sounds weird just for the sake of it… Aside from this and a couple of other moments, "Deconstruction" is a very interesting and challenging album. Good luck!
