ET – When did you start to play the drums?
GERD LÜCKING – When I was 14.
ET – Why did you start playing drums?
GERD LÜCKING – Because I always wanted to be the loudest!
ET – How old were you when you got your first drums/drum set?
GERD LÜCKING – When I was 16.
ET – How often do you practice?
GERD LÜCKING – Unfortunately, not that often!
Due to my job I only get to rehearse during recordings and tour preperations. The only chance for me to go crazy on the drums.
ET – Which drummer did you look up to when you were young and is there anyone today that you admire more than the rest?
GERD LÜCKING – I was affected by Snowy Shaw and progressive Deathmetal drummers such as Sean Reinert and Gene Hoglan.
Today I idolize Tomas Haake of Meshuggah. Bobby Jarzombek also plays very vividly and varied!
ET – What kind of equipment do you use? Which equipment is in your ears the best?
GERD LÜCKING – I´m using a Mapex Orion Birdseye Maple Drumset consisting of two 22“x 20“ Bassdrums,
10“x 8”, 12“x 9“ Racktoms and 14“x 14“, 16“x 16“ Floortoms.
All my Cymbals are from Paiste´s Signature-Series. To me that´s the perfect combination to get an in-your-face Metal-Sound!
ET – Which qualities do you think is most important to succeed as a drummer today?
GERD LÜCKING – Developing your own ideas
ET – Have you ever played a solo during a gig?
GERD LÜCKING – I think Drum-Solos are absolutely boring!
Fortunately I could avoid them so far.
ET – If you haven’t become a drummer, what would you most likely been doing?
GERD LÜCKING – Playing the flute or maybe the violin so I don´t need to carry that much stuff.
ET – Do you have any special rituals you have to go through before you enter the stage?
GERD LÜCKING – Being excited!
ET – Which releases have you been a part of so far? (Band name, title, release year)
GERD LÜCKING –
Trampire – Talking to Fools (Guitars) – 1992
Lightmare – The Fool – 1997
Courageous – Listen (Guitars) – 1998
Courageous – Remember (Guitars) – 2001
Courageous – Inertia (Guitars) – 2004
Rebellion – Sagas of Iceland – 2005
V8 Wankers – The Demon Tweak – 2005
Courageous – Downfall of Honesty (Guitars) – 2006
Rebellion – Miklagard – 2007
ET – Before we end this, you now have the opportunity to challenge another drummer to take part in this series. Pick a drummer and explain why?
GERD LÜCKING – Tomas Haake! I was honoured to actually meet him, but was so excited, that I couldn´t say anything useful! Maybe this way I can find out, by whom he was influenced!
