ANETTE OLZON – Strong

Compared to Anette Olzon’s (ex-Nightwish) other project named The Dark Element and the two albums released under that moniker, this solo offering of hers sounds much more organic and better suited to her voice, which makes "Strong" a real treat where the skilled singer is giving it her absolute all and conjures up a fiery mix of bombastic metal and vocal pyrotechnics.
Whereas The Dark Element’s song material often comes across as a little stiff-sounding, "Strong" is a lively and vigorous symphonic metal beast that beautifully showcases her vocal talents, and the melodies and hooks are marvelous and memorable throughout. With its fittingly lofty atmosphere and thick, crushing sound, this one is as epic as they come but without turning into a pompous mess or something sickeningly cliched. The band delivers an impressive performance where power and intent ooze from every riff and chord. Producer/guitarist Magnus Karlsson’s massive contributions to the 11-track output are truly noteworthy and inspired too, and to sum up, "Strong" is packed with emotion, melody, and melancholy. Highly recommended if symphonic metal appeals to you.
