JASON BIELER and the Baron von Bielski Orchestra – Songs for the Apocalypse

Saigon Kick vocalist Jason Bieler and his so-called The Baron von Bielski Orchestra released this highly eccentric, eclectic, and quirky (not to mention interesting and original-sounding) opus not that long ago, and his take on (and charmingly reckless mixture of) various genres is something out of the ordinary. What exactly is "Songs for the Apocalypse" then? It is a surreal and strange sort of hybrid between progressive metal, hard rock, and alternative rock for lack of a better or more apt description. Actually, it is much more than what I just said, and this wild and fiery blend of styles undoubtedly requires a generous amount of time and patience on the part of the listener. It ranges from something ala Alice in Chains to Fates Warning-ish soundscapes and further on to things that are slightly theatrical and carnivalesque. Many prominent guests appear on the album too, one being David Ellefson (Megadeth).

"Songs for the Apocalypse" is generally an entertaining and surprisingly catchy record despite its many musical detours and twists, but it could arguably have been a little more solid and cohesive with respect to quality as some of the tunes and sonic experiments simply fail to capture the imagination or deliver a real punch. Despite it not being flawless or all-out compelling from beginning to end, the innovative spirit is very much present throughout and even though I have listened to it several times now, I keep discovering new things whenever I spin the disc. The highlights include the uplifting "Stones Will Fly", the grunge-y "Born of the Sun", and the mellow closing track "FKSWYSO".

Trust me when I say that all you openminded weirdos out here will get a kick out of this intriguing and complex yet accessible record. It is a musically slippery delight that is unlike anything else on the Frontiers Records roster.
