ME AGAINST THE WORLD – Breaking Apart

The German outfit named Me Against the World released this debut offering of theirs some months ago and if you are on the lookout for galloping and bombastic metal with a lot of light and shade to it, then this one might be something for you. Let us have a look at the positive aspects of the record first, shall we? There are loads of kick-ass riffs, deadly solos, and great song arrangements to be found on "Breaking Apart", which is awesome. The downside to all of that is that the vocals are rather weak and uninspired, and what sucks is even more is that they detract from the otherwise strong and focused tracks that make up the album.
A forceful and compact production as well as really solid musicians who sound tight and disciplined are always a treat to listen to, but again, the vocals are a huge drawback, which is fucking frustrating, because there is variety to the tunes themselves and hardly any of them lack power or dynamics. The cool mixture of modern thrash metal with a melodic flair to it and the more traditional heavy metal elements works well. Bands such as Megadeth, Testament, and Metallica come to mind here and there, and as I mentioned earlier on, there is light and shade to the compositions in the shape of gigantic chords and frantic riffing on the one hand and mellow parts on the other, but I just wish the singer had been more in tune with the actual music and added something energetic and memorable to it.
"Breaking Apart" has many qualities and is certainly not bad, and its robust and muscular compositions have plenty of color and nuances to them, but it is let down by forgettable and flat vocals Having said that, there is a lot of potential to this one and it is their very first album, so it will be interesting to see how these guys will develop their sound and identity in the future.
