CULT OF EIBON – Lycan Twilight Sorcery

Lycan Twilight Sorcery is the debut ‘mini full-length’ from Greek BM duo Cult of Eibon. It is listed as an EP on Metallum, but in fact at 32 mins runs longer than Reign in Blood, so go figure. This is a very cool album from an act that I will be following from this point onwards. There is a variety of material, the slower stuff chugging along at a thrashy pace. Those who know their Greek fare know how good these guys can be at setting up a mesmerising rhythm, and CoE are no exception. A keyboard adds an ethereal flavour here and there, the ghost voices adding to the occult atmosphere. At speed, CoE come across something like Rotting Christ. It feels like this record could have been recorded 20 years ago. The thing is though, that all of the riffs and rhythms work so well to draw the listener into the lethal fog.
In the final analysis, some might find this record a little dated, but to think of it that way is to miss the point entirely. Cult of Eibon are a really cool band with a lot to offer and if they can keep up and surpass this type of quality, we’ll be hearing more about them in the future.
