GRAFVITNIR – Obeisance to a Witch Moon

Obeisance to a Witch Moon is the fourth full-length from Swedish Black Metal purists Grafvitnir. In terms of style, this isn’t the most modern sounding, harking back to second wave Scandinavian tropes with plenty of blasting, icy tremolo picking and ghoulish vocals. However, I don’t have a problem with any of those things. In fact, Grafvitnir have a balanced take on the genre that works well. Yes, many of the songs could easily have been written a decade ago but this simplicity is quite welcome in this case, most likely because Grafvitnir are so good at what they do. The production is cold and crisp as moonlight on snow. Each of the tracks has a real sense of urgency and menace without crossing over into complete necro reductionism. Then we have absolutely storming numbers like Wrath of the Tempest. Sadly, I think this is a band that not too many people are aware of, which is further proof that the music biz isn’t a meritocracy after all (not that we needed it to be…).
