DEVATHORN – Vritra

‘Vritra’ is the second full length for Greek three-piece Devathorn, following cold on the heels of the 2007 debut ‘Diadema’. Stylistically this isn’t as Greek as I expected, although the strong rhythmic element does give the game away somewhat. This is melodic black metal done extremely well indeed. It is fairly obvious that all of the member know their way around their instruments, but better still that they have taken their time to wait until they had a batch of well-crafted songs and memorable riffs and beats before they hit the studio. All of which makes this a strong early contender for best melodic BM of the year. Great too that the band have maintained the ritualistic BM feel while injecting as much melody as possible.
There is not a whole lot else I can say about this other than to recommend you to give it a spin.
