IMPLODE – Under A New Sun

A 4 song EP of Swedish death/ thrash here, this is my first exposure to Implode (what a great band name for a metal act). "Under a New Sun" whirs by in a scant 13 minutes, and it combines a lot of modern flavors with occasional nods to the domestic scene of early thrash. The Black Dahlia Murder comes to mind the most in terms of the furious riff/tempo attack and vicious vocal presence from Johan Ejerblom. Some of the opening stair step riffs for "She" brings to mind classic Exodus and early The Haunted.
Drummer Henrik Axelsson has steady feet and hands and remarkable timing, accenting all the key parts that should guarantee maximum body movement in the clubs and stages that Implode grace the world when touring. Check out the opening to "We’re the Soil" for serious double bass/ snare work- along with another neck breaking riff barrage from guitarists Victor Lindquist Moreau and Christoffer Knutsson. With no song reaching the 4 minute mark, the quintet lives by the credo of no riff or verse going unwanted.
When a modern band doesn’t cheapen its sound with the obvious breakdowns or metal-core elements, I’m willing to champion their cause. Implode has been around for 7 years, and this EP showcases a fiery brand of death/thrash that will go over gangbusters with a majority of the scene. I wait with anticipation over the second album.
