THE OMEGA EXPERIMENT – The Omega Experiment

These days, home recording affords artists a chance to refine their ideas at their own desired pace- and sometimes deliver stunning results. Michigan duo The Omega Experiment deliver on their first full length album a quirky progressive metal sound, filled with electronic and ambient elements that should appeal to many left of center followers. Dan Wieten handles guitars, vocals, bass, drum programming, production/ engineering and some of the samples, while Ryan Aldridge handles keyboards/samples- and they have three guest vocalists to also flesh out a lot of the melodies.
Sonically, expect vibrant keyboards with a rich Dream Theater meets Yes swirl about them- while the guitars stack layers of ideas in a stair step mannerism- as if Periphery, Soilwork, and Pain Of Salvation are duking it out in a three way cage match. The vocal melodies have this outer world quality- often panning left and right, in and out and totally dependent on the mood the band wish to get across. The 10:26 "Stimulus" for instance features some killer, almost jazzy guitar lead breaks interwoven against new age vocals and drum maneuvers worthy of Devin Townsend’s illustrious catalog- while "Furor" brings chilling symphonic keyboards and this almost cacophony of sonic screech in classic Fear Factory mold to the forefront.
There’s so much to take in between the intricacy, the forceful riffing, the atmospheric changes, the kitchen sink musical concepts along with a wide variety of narrative and computer elements that The Omega Experiment truly embody their moniker. The contrasts make songs like "Terminus" with its Yes meets Mike Patton on a modern progressive metal landscape or compact 3:57 "Motion" current favorites with my ears.
Fortunate for us, The Omega Experiment take out more musicians to perform these songs live. The Omega Experiment will not be for everyone- the ambient and new age elements to their sound take a little getting used to for most progressive metal fans. Devin Townsend approved: what I imagine time travel music to be light years beyond.
