THE LONERS – interview

Interview with the British 3-piece band THE LONERS, an act set to deliver rock mixed with punk, a little bit of heavy indie and then sprinkle some blues on top. The Loners are the best recipe for guitar music lovers!
The band originate from the middle belt of Scotland. They are 3 lads that love to perform as many live events as possible and as loud as possible.

Introduce your band, and describe your latest release:
The Loners are a flamboyantly loud, 3-piece alternative rock band. There is a mixture of almost all types of music within their music/sound. Imagine rock, mixed with punk, some 90’s dance and a sprinkle of indie. Everything about The Loners is booming – their music, their lyrics and even their attitude.

“Rock Star” has just recently been recorded and we plan to release it, very soon. This song is basically about trying to be a successful/established rock star within the music industry, while dealing with everything that comes with it. It is essentially about the fun side of playing in a band and playing live!

What’s the hardest part about being a band in this day and age?
There are enough people in the world to listen to every artist…but it is a very cut-throat industry and unless you have a following, no one really wants to give you the time of day. I would change this, go back to the 90s and hope A&R reps would just go around the country looking for acts (like us!)

When did you realise that your project had the potential to be much more than just a fun idea?
I think when you enjoy doing something so much, it shows and it somehow reflects on to others. So when we are playing live, people seem to enjoy it. So for us, it was a no brainer. Everyone wins

Tell us about your latest release, why should we check it out?
This song really sums us up. Its punchy in your face and clever. There are lots of guitar riffs to dance along to and there is even some keys, hiding in there!

How does a song typically come together for you?
I (Nath) really like writing about current events but try to find the best in everything. Although I have a few political songs, it is quite difficult to find the best in politics! But I have seen myself just lying in bed about three in the morning, not being able to sleep and writing a full song in about 3 minutes. I then put chords to it, play it to James and Mark and they make it sound amazing!
Once we are all happy with it, we can usually record the song, easily within a day.

How would you describe your sound to an unfamiliar reader?
We introduce a variety of styles within our songs. There is some grunge, indie, blues and some rock. It seems to fit well within the “alternative rock” vibe.

What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your band?
I think we want our listeners to just enjoy what they are hearing, and hopefully relate to what we are singing about. There is so much passion and energy in our songs and specifically when we play live, we really like to let loose and enjoy ourselves. We hope our listeners enjoy themselves, too!

Where would you really like to tour that you haven’t done so yet, and why?
We would love to go East and travel around Asia. But I would also like to play some European festivals like Benicassim festival, Mad Cool and also Glastonbury.

How would you say that the sound of your band has progressed over the years?
The Loners originally started as a two-piece acoustic/bass indie/pop band. This consisted of Nath and Ross. Ross decided to call it a day after around 2 years, just as our current drummer, James joined the band. James had recently met Nath in the pub, while watching a football game. Through a mutual friend, they spoke about their love for playing live and being in a band.

Nath and Mark were at University together and always touched on the idea of playing in a band, but with life taking over and following different directions, it wasn’t until 12 years later that Mark decided to join the new “The Loners” line-up.

This was the start of the new “sound” The Loners were about to develop. What once was an indie band, has now developed into an alternative rock, band.

How excited are you for 2024, and what can fans expect from you?
We will be promoting our new single and playing it as often as we can. Hopefully another tour will be on the cards as well as a couple more festivals. Come and give us a shout at the next gig!
