NOX INTERNA – A Minor Road
A rather charming and entertaining affair, this EP by the goth rock outfit Nox Interna is worth checking out if goth rock with a slightly dark vibe to it appeals to you. Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect from this one, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Although the two original compositions as well as the cover version of "Entre Dos Tierras" (originally by Heroes del Silencio) that constitute this cursed thing will not exactly go down in history as all-out brilliant tunes as such, they do possess an irresistible drive and some catchy passages and sections that not only work pretty well, but also attain the desired effect i.e. establishing a melancholy mood that is enticing. While the vocals are somewhat hit-or-miss from time to time, the melodies are generally quite strong and there is energy as well as emotional intensity to the performance by Nox Interna throughout.
On the surface of things, "A Minor Road" might appear as nothing more than a teaser for the upcoming full-length album scheduled for 2019, but the title track and "Doomed Generation" possess enough qualities to warrant investigation if goth rock or dark electro rock turn you on. The cover rendition is a mixed bag and is definitely the least interesting thing about the EP, but all in all this is some well-written, solid, and entertaining stuff, yet it is neither flawless nor innovative. On a final note, the digipak version of "A Minor Road" looks good and is most definitely worth seeking out.
