NECROWRETCH – Satanic Slavery

I don’t go for quite a lot of modern death metal. I dislike the generic cookie monster vocals, the triggered-to-shit drums and the self-conscious attempts at things like adding fruity fretless bass lines in an effort to be progressive or of filling every gap with a dozen sweeps in the hope that someone will call you ‘technical’. And that is where Necrowretch step in. They are guilty of none of the above. Instead, their brand of death metal embraces darkness and evil in a way that bands at the dawn of the genre did – back when it could be about Satan and corpses. In that sense, there is a certain South American feel to Necrowretch’s work, but the influences of Floridian and classic European death metal and modern black thrash, are strong enough that the sound does not descend to Latin American savagery and bestiality. In fact, that particular placement of Necrowretch’s sound is one of the best things about them – it seamlessly blends each of these approaches to DM without being sucked under. Because of that, it manages to tick all of the boxes while still coming across as fresh and interesting.
On top of that the production is excellent, the musicianship is killer and the songs all smash your face into the floor. What more could you want?
