Nigredo hails from Greece and was spawned in 2013 by Maelstrom (drums) and A. (guitars, bass, vocals). Nigredo performs intense, ugly, and aggressive black metal with a sinister and nihilistic vibe to it. Some of the riffs and moods conveyed by the band on this 20-minute EP remind me of that insane US outfit named Amputator, although very few are probably familiar with the latter, so I will just let that lie for now. The Polish horde known as Kriegsmaschine also comes to mind from time to time. Anyway, Nigredo has a pretty firm grasp of how to compose and arrange somewhat simple and catchy songs with a lot of attitude, darkness, and energy to them, and for that the duo should be applauded. While none of the four songs that constitute «Facets of Death» are original or innovative as such, they are nevertheless well-played, memorable, and atmospheric. There are some great twists and surprising turns throughout that add some dynamics and unpredictability to the whole thing. Also, the album cover as well as the layout and whole presentation of the EP is quite cool and captivating, which, obviously, is a great thing. If extreme and raw black metal that is executed way better than most other bands out there sounds appealing to you then by all means check Nigredo and «Facets of Death» out. Good stuff.
