WITCHCRAFT – Hegyek Felettem

Of all the Witchcrafts out there, these guys are the Hungarian Black Metal version and this is their third full-length release (even though the first was a kind of compilation of demos etc).
In terms of sound, we are looking at something that harks back to the early 90’s. ‘Hegyek Felettem’ comes across cold and raw, like classic Darkthrone with a bit of Carpathian Forest thrown into the mix. All of the lyrics are in Hungarian so the name of the album could translate as ‘My Goldfish Has Died’ for all I know! The vocals are harsh, the guitars a pleasant and hypnotic hum and the drums just about keep up. Unfortunately, they become repetitive in places and sometimes the phrasing isn’t strong enough so that it sounds as if the downbeat is turning into the upbeat, which is sometimes a little off-putting and one of my pet peeves.
In the final analysis, ‘My Goldfish Has Died’ captures the spirit of classic second wave BM well, creating a mesmerising wall of bleak noise. A good effort!
