Although a collective of incredibly skilled musicians, the Spanish act Lords of Black has failed to impress me earlier on and their previous records always struck me as being somewhere between slightly above average and mildly entertaining. However, the outfit’s latest album, "Alchemy of Souls Part I", is much better all-around than its predecessors and this time the songwriting is really good while the tracks embody all the right power metal trademarks and characteristics ala bombast and punch, massive riffs and epic melodies, soaring vocals and otherworldly atmospheres.
Vocalist Ronnie Romero (Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow) is pouring his heart and soul into these meaty compositions and there no shortage of monstrously huge riffs or blistering leads here. I also found the disc to be more varied and more interesting with respect to the arrangements than pretty much any other entry in their discography. As is usually the case with these guys’ albums, this one boasts a stellar production that oozes power and professionalism.
"Alchemy of Souls Part I" is comprised of sharp, pounding, and heavy tunes with lots of colorful moments to them this is definitely a solid LP and a satisfying listen. It is also their catchiest one yet and I had heaps of fun spinning this one. Give it a shot!
