Dan Heide may primarily be known for his superb work with renowned acts such as Ljungblut and the impeccable Zeromancer, but as this intimate and reflective collection of heartfelt songs shows, the man is a brilliant artist in his own right and an incredibly skilled songwriter who is perfectly capable of delivering great things when on his own.

Change expertly guides us through various moods and atmospheres that all harbor a sense of melancholy and work splendidly as a comment on the human condition. While some are fluid and poetic in terms of words and melodies, others are a little more direct and raw, but the one thing that remains a constant throughout is the album’s magnificent knack for pulling the listener in and maintaining a compelling aura from beginning to end – an aura that moves and touches the very fibers of one’s being. Beautiful is undoubtedly an apt description here, but another way of summing up this richly textured (and richly rewarding) experience is that it embodies tender and emotional storytelling while simultaneously sounding utterly private and personal to its creator.  Change has both the potential and ability to appeal to fans and listeners of Americana, brooding singer-songwriter tunes, dark rock music, alternative rock, and possibly even indie rock, which obviously makes it a genre-defying slab of earnest and profound music that speaks to the soul rather than adhering to conventions and norms. Therein lies its greatest strength, and it is not often that one comes across compositions that are as meditative and moving as “The Night Sky,” “Sometimes,” the title track, and the pop-like gem that is “Dine Øyne.” Although no fan of Bob Dylan’s tunes as such, the cover rendition of “The Times They Are A-Changin’” is incredibly inspired and surprisingly good. Simply put, Change is a genuine treasure.
