The Swedish death metal squadron known as Volturyon has vomited forth a brand new onslaught of brutal and pummeling tunes, more specifically ten of them that collectively constitute this third full-length album of theirs entitled "Cleansed by Carnage".
The opening track, "Pile of Human", pretty much explodes in your face and from there on there is no fucking let-up. These four ugly-looking Swedes want to hurt you…badly! The brutal and bombastic death metal spawned by Volturyon is somewhat derivative in the sense that it does not add or contribute anything new to the genre, but that does not change the fact that the songs are both well-written and full of cool twists and turns. Like I said, hardly original or innovative stuff, but entertaining to listen to all the same. Bands such as Centinex, Deranged, Cannibal Corpse, Spawn of Possession, and the likes do come to mind whenever I listen to songs such as "To Starve You", "Cocoon", and the title track, so if those bands appeal to you then you ought to get off your ass and check this fucker out. Luckily, Volturyon also have a knack for varying their music (even more so than some of the other bands I just mentioned) by shifting effortlessly from fast and intense parts to extremely crunchy and groovy ones, and I must say that I really do like it whenever one of those slow and bone-crushing riffs creeps into the show. The last song of the album is a strong cover of Hypocrisy’s "Pleasure of Molestation".
"Cleansed by Fire" is without a shadow of doubt the best Volturyon release to date. The solid and punchy production is definitely suitable for this particular brand of death metal, and the musicianship is excellent all around. The many catchy riffs and memorable choruses coupled with those deep growls courtesy of Alexander Högbom tell you all you need to know. This album will break your neck!
