BLINDNESS & LIGHT – interview

BLINDNESS & LIGHT – interview

Introduce your band, and describe your latest release:

We are an informal collective of like minded musicians that are into post-punk/indie. We are spread across North Wales, Northern England, Argentina and 2 members live in Tokyo. Singer/song writer guitarist Colin M Potter is based on the Isle of Anglesey. Earlier this year we released our 2nd album “I Dreamt I Had Insomnia” which is available on all streaming platforms with CDs and limited edition coloured vinyl available on Bandcamp and selected record shops in North Wales and North West England.

What’s the hardest part about being a band in this day and age?

The necessity to constantly engage with social media. There’s no avoiding it really if you want to get heard by as many people as possible.

When did you realise that your project had the potential to be much more than just a fun idea?

Redundancy 3 years ago left Colin with time on his hands. There was unfinished business with a bunch of unfinished tracks which quickly gathered momentum. It became obvious that we could achieve a lot more than we first expected and that feeling of being interlopers quickly disappeared.

Tell us about your latest release, why should we check it out?

“I Dreamt I Had Insomnia” was recorded over most of last year. We don’t work quickly. This time we recorded and produced it all ourselves though mixing and mastering was done at Outback Studios in Germany. It captures a very post-punk / indie sound in a better way than the first album. Nearly all instruments are real which helps to create a more natural and human sound with more energy.

How does a song typically come together for you?

Everything starts with an acoustic guitar. Chords and song structure are sorted out then the vocal melody. The lyrics come last. Songs are left unfinished when recording starts and without fail tracks develop a mind of their own. The studio is an instrument in itself.

How would you describe your sound to an unfamiliar reader?

It’s indie guitar music set in a post-punk landscape. The lyrics are for those who actually care what songs are about. All the lyrics are here on our website…. https://www.blindnessandlight.com/home/lyrics

What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your band?

A sense of liberation and freedom. All our songs drift unconsciously towards this concept.

Where would you really like to tour that you haven’t done so yet, and why?

Japan. Three of us spent quite a bit of time in Tokyo recently. The music culture, especially in places like Koenji, is formidable. The Japanese manage to retain their established historical culture while still embracing everything that’s new. An impressive place.

How would you say that the sound of your band has progressed over the years?

I think when we started, things were slightly too sanitised. For example the drums were programmed. Now we have a real drummer and everything sounds so much better and dynamic.

If you sequence too much it ends up sounding like AI created elevator music. Keep it human where you can, the slight imperfections enhance music in ways that bring it closer to perfection.

How excited are you for 2025, and what can fans expect from you?

We’re really excited. The 2nd album is doing well and receiving many great reviews. We’re busy recording our 3rd album which will be released in probably autumn 2026. Shards will be released as a single on 9th May and we’ll still aim to keep releasing a single every 2 months.
