MISTRA – Waltz of Death

MISTRA – Waltz of Death

The talented duo consisting of Benedicte Adrian and Anders Odden is an inspired and musically eclectic one that merges something akin to grand-sounding gothic soundscapes with subtle black metal influences and also something along the lines of dark symphonic rock (and even hints of electro pop), and the great thing is that it works like a charm to these ears. Deeply atmospheric and covered in a melancholy wintry mist, their beautiful compositions are as haunting and emotive as they are effective and cohesive, and Adrian and Odden are undoubtedly adept at incorporating subtle details and playing with space as evidenced by the way in which the material has been arranged. While the piano and guitars conjure up rich textures that swirl around and eventually envelop one’s mind, the vocals deliver some stunning melodies on top of it all not to mention an abundance of infectious hooks and irresistible earworms. The spirited rendition of Kate Bush’s immortal “Wuthering Heights” is a marvelous album-closing track with a seductive feel to it, but the biggest highlights here are “No Cure for Dreams” and “Last Man Alive” due in part to their darkly romantic nature and stirring refrains.

Waltz of Death has a chilly grandeur and an orchestral aura that are incredibly appealing, and the opus is well-worth investing one’s time in as it serves up some magnificent tracks with just the right amount of drama and passion to them. Not to be missed for the openminded listeners out there.
