MYTHOPOEIC MIND – Hatchling

MYTHOPOEIC MIND – Hatchling

Norwegian prog rockers Mythopoeic Mind, which includes Panzerpappa’s Steinar Børve in its ranks, are about to release this charming and beautifully crafted opus of theirs, and it is as musically playful as it is elegantly arranged. While lead singer Veronika Hørven Jensen’s emotive vocals are one of the strengths of this 5-song record, the melodies are gorgeous too and conjure up different moods that range from joyous and uplifting to dark and somber.

There is a good flow and plenty of drive to these tunes and the way in which those trumpets and saxophones color the compositions while also producing some unexpected turns and adding interesting textures to the material is pretty damn brilliant. Although "Hatchling" does recall the works of Caravan and the Canterbury scene to a certain extent, it is by no means a retro-sounding piece of work as such and it fits in nicely with a lot of what is going on in the prog scene today. A confident and dynamic output that boasts a warm and solid production, and if you want a teaser of sorts, try listening to either the melancholy instrumental "Winter of ’73", the bleak and almost hazy-sounding "Fog Vision", or the gentle title track. Quality stuff.
