MYSTAGOS – Azoth

MYSTAGOS – Azoth

This is my first encounter with the one-man black metal entity known as Mystagos, and I must say that its raw and murky atmosphere is right up my alley. Deeply rooted in the occult and with a thorough grasp of how to evoke a truly sinister aura by means of strong (dissonant) riffs and unsettling melodies, “Azoth” is akin to a swirling mass of darkness that washes over you and inevitably sucks you into its surreal universe. There are subtle nods and parallels to Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, and Aosoth throughout in terms of style and sound, but there is something so utterly personal and heartfelt about this blackened 7-track opus that turns it into something unique that mastermind Heolstor can rightfully call his own. The way in which the clean vocals and ritualistic chants have been incorporated is hugely inspiring, and the record is dynamic and unpredictable, which is great. The piece entitled “Shamdon” even ventures into more experimental territory and recalls certain aspects of Virus and Dødheimsgard. Brilliant!
Simply put, there is a compelling sense of purpose and determination to “Azoth” that sets it apart from so many other black metal acts out there, and if you want an otherworldly yet unpolished listening experience, look no further than this one.

Standout track/album highlight: The hypnotic and strangely melancholic “The Weight of a Burial Shroud”.
