GROUNDBREAKER – Groundbreaker

GROUNDBREAKER – Groundbreaker

Featuring Steve Overland (FM) and Robert Sall (Work of Art, W.E.T), Groundbreaker is a melodic rock outfit that brings to mind bands such as Journey and Pride of Lions with a dash of Def Leppard thrown in for good measure. Obviously, there are also nods and parallels to FM and W.E.T. throughout and this self-titled record is quite easy on the ear and has a strong emphasis on sing-along choruses and instantly memorable melodies to it, which is perfectly exemplified by the tunes entitled "Standing Up for Love" and "Something Worth Fighting For". Simply put, this is a throwback to the AOR and hard rock of the 80s and nothing new or adventurous as such, but it is an enjoyable and well-crafted slab of arena-sized rock despite it sounding a tad too formulaic and safe in places. The energetic "The Days of Our Life" and "The Way It Goes" are definitely the highlights of the album and ought to receive some serious radio airplay.

Good production values, great musicianship, exquisite solos, cool vocals, and some rather wicked interplay between the guitars and keyboards make this a satisfying listen. Again, this is neither inventive nor innovative stuff, so do not expect anything mind-blowing or edgy here, but it is certainly a focused effort that ought to please all you lovers of melodic rock out there.
