LATITUDES – Old Sunlight

‘Old Sunlight’ is the third album release from British post metal act Latitudes, and quite a revelation it is. On the one hand we have sweeping, epic song structures that carry the listeners away on waves of ethereal melody, while on the other we have crushing hardcore inspired heaviness that sits on your chest like a nightmare. That contrast is part of the key to the success of this record as all of the elements are seamlessly integrated to achieve an almost perfect balance. The clean vocals of Adam Symonds do much to lift each song, but the layered approach and subtle keyboards play their part too. All of the other musicianship is spot on but what really strikes the listener is the maturity and poise of this work. Twenty listens in at least and I am still finding things that surprise and new reasons to like this. Fans of Isis, Neurosis and Cult of Luna will feel like they have arrived home and wonder why they ever left the house. I am off not to pick up their first two records…
