SeroLogiikal Scars is the debut full-length from German black/death metal marauders Kthoniik Cerviiks. Those of you who were wise enough to check out their colossal Heptaëdrone demo in 2014 know that this in an extremely original and exciting act. The basic matrix is one of modern black/death metal – brutal and with some South American style bestiality in the approach. However, KC work hard to go beyond that idea and create something that the listener hasn’t heard before, something that evokes an all new aural landscape – a type of insectile hell that flays the mind and lays its parasitic eggs in your brain. This is achieved by some extremely weird and otherworldly riffing. There are passages on here that sound like the marshalling of hell’s legion and the freshness of the approach make them all the more immediate and authentic.
The musicianship is excellent and even better is the fact that the guys are going to such great lengths to forge a new channel in the heady topography of modern extreme metal. The only problem really, is the songs. Although they grab the listener at times and although they can be highly atmospheric, at other times, they just wander off in a fog of their own making. This means that the listener’s attention will most like wane so only those willing to concentrate and persevere will reap the benefits of this album. On the whole though, KC are a band of great potential and one to watch for.
