DEATHRONATION – Hallow the Dead

DEATHRONATION – Hallow the Dead

Ah, sweet old school death metal… the type that gets the blood boiling, hair whipping, and squeezes every ounce of a bad day into the good. Germany’s Deathronation on their debut album "Hallow the Dead" live up to the task, crushing skulls on these 8 songs. Names such as B.S. Goathammer, Stiff Old, S. Muerte, and Mr. Freeze provide the sounds, blending the best of Entombed, Obituary, and Asphyx into winners such as the seven minute opener "Deathchant Assyria" and speedy stop and go anthem "Steelpanther’s Fist".

I realize the genre in 2014 when it comes to death metal has floated more in favor of technical acts and vicious brutality over heads down execution – but in the end Deathronation wins me over because they prove to strike a balance between heaviness and memorable riffs that translate into killer songs. "Hallow the Dead" lives me wanting more from the band – an ideal situation to be in.
