Ever since 2011’s Sons of the North, UK powerhouse Black Spiders have made people across this weary land yearn for more of their mix of hard hitting stoner metal and classic rock. This Savage Land kicks off with a cannon to the face in the shape of ‘Knock you out’. It’s the perfect opener, injecting the listener with just what the doctor ordered.
Following a strong opening act, the album staggers like a drunken Irishman through a 10 track album that sways between brilliance and disappointment. Tracks like ‘Balls’, ‘Put love in its place’ and the opening track ‘Knock you out’, push the boundaries of what will be expected from a third album, whereas ‘Stick it to the man’, ‘Trouble’ and ‘Raised by wolves’ never manage to stand out as anything more than filler. They’re not bad in that sense, but when compared to the album’s highlights, the difference in quality is simply to high so they’re left feeling like disappointments.
Overall though, This Savage Land is a terrific addition to the Black Spiders universe. It delivers a great set of new songs that will certainly sound just as fantastic belting out of festival speakers next summer as they will screeching out of some headbangin’ teenager’s earphones. Black Spiders is back, and they return with a sledgehammer to the foundation of everything you hold dear!
