Self-doubt and disillusion: the weight of these universal feelings has fueled countless creative endeavors. For Kathryn Georgina, a classically trained pianist and singer, they became the driving force behind her debut album, Formative—an evocative reimagining of the hardcore, screamo, and post-hardcore anthems that shaped her musical identity. The album is set to be released on the 7th February 2025 via Mongrel Records.
Today sees the release of her first single, Dear Youth (Day 52) — a haunting piano interpretation of The Ghost Inside’s powerful track—Kathryn invites listeners to experience the raw emotion and transformative beauty that lies beneath the noise.
“Music shapes us all,” Kathryn reflects. “This album is about revealing the beauty in the songs that molded me. These genres are often defined by intensity, but beneath that, there’s an incredible depth and poignancy.”

Formative takes fans on a sonic journey, reinterpreting iconic tracks like Alexisonfire’s Accidents and Poison the Well’s Pieces of You in Me. With each note, Kathryn breathes new life into beloved classics, her piano-led arrangements uncovering the tender melodies within. Inspired by the works of Christopher O’Riley, known for his piano covers of Radiohead and Elliott Smith, Kathryn’s album offers a fresh perspective on the raw power of the early 2000s post-hardcore scene.
“The message of the album is that there is beauty in everything,” Kathryn shares. “These songs are deeply personal to me, and I hope this interpretation resonates with others who have found solace in their raw intensity.”
Recorded at home on an electric piano, Formative is as intimate in its creation as it is in its sound. Engineered by her Husband Ashley De Beer amidst the rhythm of daily life, the album is a testament to perseverance, vulnerability, and love.
Kathryn’s journey from self-doubt to creative expression has resulted in a deeply emotive body of work that redefines the boundaries of genre. With Dear Youth (Day 52), she sets the stage for an album that is equal parts homage and reinvention.
For fans of The Ghost Inside, Alexisonfire, and anyone seeking to rediscover the beauty of alternative music through an unexpected lens, Kathryn Georgina’s Formative promises an unforgettable listening experience.
