The premiere supergroup (not a tag of their own accord) when it comes to album-oriented melodic rock, Asia return to North America this fall for a 30 date tour that will take them from the East Coast to the West Coast in two months, including a special intimate date on September 12th at the Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley, Massachusetts. Supporting their recent released Gravitas album, original members John Wetton (vocals, bass), Geoff Downes (keyboards), and Carl Palmer (drums) have added guitarist Sam Coulson to the fold following Steve Howe’s retirement from the band.
Their 1982 self-titled debut sold over 7 million copies alone in the United States, never going out of print even in this current digitally driven music marketplace. Early videos for hits like "Heat of the Moment", "Only Time Will Tell", and "Don’t Cry" off the follow up Alpha were regular staples on the upstart MTV network. The quartet continual take pride on their deep discography, mixing up their well-known 1980’s records with a bevy of newer cuts since their reunion in 2006 and subsequent studio albums, Phoenix (2008), Omega (2010), and XXX (2012).
Intertwining John Wetton’s rich vocal melodies with Geoff Downes knack for picking out the right musical hook combinations makes for a satisfying listener experience, pulling from their previous UK art rock and progressive roots. Wetton and Carl Palmer deliver in unison as a solid rhythm section, allowing Sam Coulson the chance to bring home the chord combinations in the best melodic rock way.
