FLYING CIRCUS – Flying Circus

The German outfit Flying Circus is an interesting and musically eclectic one that falls somewhere between psychedelic hard rock and 70s-inspired prog rock, and the result is both impressive and quite intriguing. This is essentially a best of, but the cool thing is that the group have re-recorded all tracks dating from before 2011 and then remixed the ones that were composed after that date (minus the ones from last year’s "1968" LP), so even if you are already familiar with these sprawling and hazy tunes, there is something new for you to enjoy here. Speaking of new, there is an exclusive piece present on the disc appropriately titled "Dystopia".
While Flying Circus’ spirited mixture of hard rock and prog rock recalls such greats as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, King Crimson, and ELP, it very much sounds like a thing of its own and these veterans have clearly carved out a unique musical identity. Some of the more gentle and serene passages remind me of Fairport Convention at times, which is cool, and the compositions are richly textured and loaded with atmosphere. In addition, the evocative melodies are woven together in superb fashion with countless noteworthy nuances to them. With a fantastic groove throughout and a truly cohesive feel, it really does sound as if these tunes exist outside of time and space as they have that wonderful timeless aura to them. Just have a listen to the emotionally charged and deeply moving "Follow the Empress" and you will see what I mean.
Playful but never unfocused, this is a vigorous and sparkling output that all lovers and admirers of progressive hard rock ought to cherish. It is both an excellent starting point if you are new to the band and a very cool addition to the catalogue if you are already a fan and own their previous records. Recommended!
