”Becoming Human” by the talented Simon Collins is arguably a bit of an odd entry in the Frontiers Records discography but all the better for it in the sense that it offers something radically different to what said label usually releases. Variety is good, right?
What are we dealing with? Well, this 12-track effort is essentially a progressive rock album with a current sheen to it, which is to say that it toys with various traits and elements relating to (experimental) pop, electro rock, ambient soundscapes, and even subtle touches of EDM and industrial music. Several interesting textures and layers abound and Collins has a good ear for strong and evocative melodies. There are plenty of cleverly conceived arrangements present on the disc, numerous cool and unexpected twists, and superb vocals courtesy of mastermind Collins himself. The compositions possess a good glow and are rich in atmosphere. The title track is a delight and has a great drive to it while ”Man Made Man” is incredibly diverse yet catchy. The reflective and moving piece that is ”Thoughts Become Matter” and the haunting ”I Will be Waiting” are the two standouts though.
”Becoming Human” is neither sublime nor innovative as such but rather a modern sounding output with a contemporary (proggy) feel and edge to it, and the whole affair is pretty solid in terms of quality and most definitely a worthwhile listen.
