WHITEMOUR – The Devil Inherits the World

Words such as bombast and precision constantly come to mind whenever I listen to this enjoyable and varied slab of blackened death metal by Finnish combo Whitemour. Imagine a cross between Behemoth, Morbid Angel, and Ragnarok, but do not forget to add a touch of Chton and a dash of Melechesh to the venomous brew – that pretty much sums up what is on offer here. Another good reference point would be Gehenna’s ridiculously underrated piece of brilliance entitled "Murder".

The tunes range from pulverizing to symphonic and further on to murky and grim, and there are plenty of twists and turns lying in wait throughout "The Devil Inherits the World" and its ten compositions. From a musical and technical point of view, this is an impressive record, but more importantly, the majority of songs are quite intense and memorable affairs, and the album strikes a great balance between the instantly catchy and the slightly more challenging and complex. The sparse use of keyboards is tasteful and the ear-piercing riffs are sharp and strong.

"The Devil Inherits the World" is a highly competent offering whose tracks are by turn dark, melodic, and utterly savage. In short, there is some real musical talent on display here, and the output is not without a sense of sinister drama that fits my mood perfectly this week. If you are a fan of black/death metal, make sure you check this one out.
