Agusa is a most engrossing and delightful addition to the already impressive prog rock roster of Karisma Records. Formed in Sweden back in 2013 and having released several noteworthy songs and gems since then, this musically adventurous ensemble takes us right back to the late 60s and early 70s by means of their lively take on psychedelic and folk-influenced prog. However, the musical odyssey in question that you and I are about to embark on is not something brand-new per say; instead, we have a sparkling and bright-sounding remaster of their debut album titled Högtid on our hands, which originally came out in 2014 and garnered the band quite a few fans and followers. It is fabulous to behold its evocative artwork and immerse oneself in its authentic grooves once again, and the fact that is has been bolstered by a warmer and more well-defined mix only adds to its retro-ish charm.

The remastering has breathed even more life and subtle power into their audacious arrangements and melodies, and in many ways, Agusa’s musical explorations recall the mighty Camel and their self-titled debut as well as the classic Mirage LP. There are also prominent traces of krautrock to be found and enjoyed throughout and which have been incorporated into the wider sonic palette rather elegantly. Even the earthy feel of early King Crimson comes into play now and again, and the bucolic aura of certain passages makes this scribe think of the Canterbury scene due to their inherently upbeat vibe. Not a bad thing, eh?

There is no shortage of good ideas on this great-looking disc, and if you are not already a fervent supporter of Agusa’s moving and weirdly joyous experiments, this remastered version of the primarily instrumental Högtid is the perfect place to start.

Högtid will be out May 2, 2025, via Karisma Records.
