Although the Icelandic Lucy in Blue are labeled a prog band, one could argue that some of their compositions are almost akin to melancholy pop music with elements and touches of 60s psychedelia (think very early Pink Floyd) and 70s progressive rock ala Camel’s "Mirage" masterpiece to it. In other words, this marvelous 8-track opus is a highly well-constructed record that acts as a hypnotic and emotionally charged soundtrack while simultaneously containing some of pop’s easily accessible and memorable aspects. "In Flight" is layered but never convoluted or decidedly complex. Most importantly, it is a touching and heartfelt album with a Scandinavian sense of longing and loneliness to it, and there is a stark and raw vibe to such excellent tracks as "Respire" and "Tempest", but the album works incredibly well as one long and coherent symphony. There is also an underlying sense of the introverted coursing through it, and on top of that there are plenty of fascinating dynamics and textures in play throughout.

With its great songs and utterly solid musicianship, this is simply one of those underground gems that you need to get your hands on if you fancy organic and experimental pop/prog/rock music. It is a hugely creative affair that moves from barren and windswept fields to warm nostalgia, and if Syd Barrett and King Crimson had a love child, "In Flight" would be it.
