DREADFUL FATE – The Sin of Sodom

As the cool band name might suggest, the Swedish horde Dreadful Fate is firmly rooted in old-school black/thrash metal, which is to say bestial and violent metal extremity that harkens back to how many of the pioneers did it back in those glorious and murky 80s. This shit is fucking explosive and even downright lethal at times, which is evidenced by the vicious title track and the ripping "Unholy Lust".
They even pull a cover version of Kreator’s "Tormentor" off perfectly and manage to make it their own. Incredible! The riffs are memorable, the guitar solos sound like bullets, the drums are somewhat akin to nails being driven into one’s skull, and the vocals are wonderfully over-the-top and aggressive.
As to the production, the organic and vibrant sound of the EP enhances the atmosphere of the song material nicely and it actually sounds as if this could have been recorded back in 1984. Having said that, "The Sin of Sodom" certainly lacks neither punch nor drive; there is plenty of energy on display here and the musicianship is solid all around. I only wish that it contained more than three tunes, but that is merely testament to how extraordinary it actually is. A full-length assault would be most welcome!
"The Sin of Sodom" is a great EP that ought to appeal to all lovers of quality metal out there. It is most definitely one of the best black/thrash acts that I have had the (mis)fortune of coming across lately, so if you want face-melting metal with a raw and crushing edge to it, this wicked gem is the answer.
