KYY – Beyond Flesh – Beyond Matter – Beyond Death

Up next we have this debut full length from Finnish black metal act Kyy. The first thing to say is that this is far from the normal Finnish output for this genre, in terms of sound, production and approach. Kyy follow a ritualistic but also rocking pathway that brings the Watain of a decade ago to mind. Which isn’t a bad thing. (Better than Watain 2016 in my opinion.)
The production is extremely well realised. All of the instruments are present with beefy, throaty voices that carry the requisite power and impact. As digital production offers such clean mixes, it can be difficult for acts to maintain that trve cvlt vibe, but Kyy have made it look easy here. The musicianship is excellent throughout too.
The songs are good overall, but this is one of those strange albums that comes along every now and then where all of the pieces seem to be in the right place and yet the final effect is less than one would expect. Where exactly this lack of charisma comes from I don’t know, but strangely, there are much worse albums than this that I like more. My guess is probably the songs themselves. Structurally they are on the money but they just don’t do it for me. Sorry guys!
