LUGNET – Lugnet

Swedish for ‘tranquility’, Lugnet’s sound is actually very explosive in a retro 70’s hard rock mold for this self-titled album. Vocalist Roger Solander has solid bluesy pipes that are very reminiscent of the late Ray Gillen or classic David Coverdale on winning tracks such as "All the Way" and "It Ain’t Easy". Smooth hooks, stripped down guitars, in the pocket bass and drum parts – it’s all in the right combinations, even when choosing to be a little expansive on the instrumental front for the 10:25 closer "Into the Light".
You’ll get a lot of warm feelings as if you are hearing a melding of Rival Sons, Blues Pills, and possibly older Led Zeppelin/ Whitesnake when taking in these songs. The guitar attack from Marcus Holten and Danne Jansson can be fast and furious or sultry and swanky, the latter more evident when honing in on a slower groove that permeates highlight "Veins". Supplementing the Lugnet foundation with special guest Hammond Organ expert Bruno Erminero increases the believable retro-elements, but doesn’t distract from the band’s intuitive sense of their musicianship and capabilities.
While a lot of newer hard rock fans wish they could experience classic Deep Purple with Blackmore, or Whitesnake during the Lord/Moody/Mardsen years, at least bands like Lugnet continue on in that 70’s tradition while generating some new music for our benefit. Sweden continues to be a treasure trove of impressive bands and stellar musicians – these 8 songs clearly illustrate why. Crank this up loud.
