VOICES OF DESTINY – Crisis Cult

The third album from German symphonic metal band Voices of Destiny is another logical continuation from their previous two albums – of which 2012’s "Power Dive" impressed me more than their "From the Ashes" debut. Adding in a lot of aggressive modern/ death touches in terms of riff choices, tones, and extreme growls from keyboardist Lukas Palme which contrast adequately to the siren sonic outlook of the new feminine singer Ada Flechtner, songs such as "To the Slaughter" and "Stormcrow" veer off the normal Nightwish path, reminding me of the current direction of Scar Symmetry at times.

Exciting times for the genre, because I believe the cross-pollination of power, gothic, death, and melodic metal makes symphonic metal quite adept at creativity, if the musicians continue to push forward new ideas. "Crisis Cult" tows that line between instantaneous hook appeal and giving us material that contains more bite, more finesse, more overall heaviness – making Voices of Destiny steadily appealing and a possible future headliner.
