SARKOM – Doomsday Elite

"Doomsday Elite" is actually my first encounter with the Norwegian entity known as Sarkom, even though I have often come across their name in the underground press these last few years. Anyway, this album, which came out in October last year (2013), contains 8 interesting, diverse, and intensely dark black metal tunes that are quite unpredictable and moody, and that, my scummy friend, is indeed a good thing in my book. The riffs and melodies are memorable, the songs are well-arranged, the musicianship is excellent, and the record in itself is quite dynamic. All the instruments are clearly audible, and the fact that the band has managed to conceive an album that strikes a good balance between being heavy and crushing on the one side and yet suitably raw on the other is something that these gentlemen deserve praise for. I won’t bother you with a track-by-track analysis, but before I end this review let me just point out that this is most definitely well-written and well-played Norwegian black metal that evokes a haunting atmosphere and is filled to the brim with hate and aggression, which should appeal to some of you fuckers out there.
