SCIBEX – Path to Omors

Brazilian extreme metal band Scibex issues their debut album "Path to Omors", and oh what a mighty avant-garde 61 minute album you will undertake should you choose to stay the course. I know that latter day Death and Opeth will come to mind most on "Cryptic Comfort Zone", the maze mind-number "Mermaid Serpent" and slightly culturally textured epic title cut – but the avant-garde outlook and left field thought process makes Scibex intriguing and special. Sometimes free-flowing bass parts take the lead, at other times the clean, doom-gothic melodies give way to black metal screams – whatever is necessary to keep the adventure forward and listeners alert, this quartet will do.
Life is not meant to be flat line or linear. "Path to Omors" is a record to transport into outer worlds, proof of metal’s longevity and innovation to push constraints or any boundaries. Scibex push and pull constantly, treading lightly and intuitively and then bursting at the seams – check out "Built to Collapse" for both yin and yang aspects to their composing and performance output. Prepare to become mesmerized a dozen or so times as the chemistry will not latch onto the brain matter until a few focused sessions have sunk in.
In two short years this band has solidified their style and direction, and as such should be making inroads at a time when imitators outnumber innovators. Probably will be best appreciated years down the line, but do not let Scibex travel into the abyss… treasure their work now and forever, see them live if you can – and let’s hope the originality continues on the follow up album.
